How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture

Acupuncture uses fine sterilized needles to stimulate specific points in the body to promote the circulation of “Qi” (the body’s own energy) through different meridians which supply of Nutrients the organs, body tissues, muscles and vessels as well as unblocking any excess or stagnation caused by trauma, diseases, poor diet and lifestyle habbits, stress and other environmental factors. In Chinese Medicine, diseases emerge when the there’s an unbalance or blockage in the proper circulation of Qi. Acupuncture has an effect in the Central Nervous System, research has shown that it can stimulate the release of Neurotransmiters, activates pain receptors, stimulates hormones, and can have a effect in blood chemestry.

What to expect during a treatment?

During your first visit as in any consultation, the practitioner will take the first 15-20 minutes in getting all the information related to your health and your chief complaint. Taking the pulse and looking at the tongue helps the practitioner to conclude a diagnosis. Needles can be retained from 15-45 minutes. Patient can feel a tingling sensation in the point of insertion. The practitioner can use different techniques to help stimulate the points such as moxibustion, cupping or electro-stimulation depending of what we are trying to achieve. Some people are more sensitive to needles than others, so its important to communicate to your practitioner what you’re experiencing.
